Event Description

Shiping Hao--award-winning opera star, with China's coveted designation Artist First Class--will give a rare demonstration of the art form.

Mr. Hao is a member of the China National Peking Opera Company. He has played the roles of  xiaosheng , a handsome young male and wusheng, male martial artist.

Peking (Beijing) Opera combines song, dance, martial arts, and acting to tell stories and legends of China's past. It became popular during the middle of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and became fully developed by the mid-19th century. It is regarded as one of the national treasures of China. Major performance troupes are based in Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai.

This event is organized by the Princeton University Peking Opera Immersion Program and the Chinese Language Program with the support of the New Jersey Peking Opera Society.
