Xu Zhaoying 徐朝嬴

Graduated in July 2005 from the Jilin Academy of Arts with a diploma and has been dedicated to Peking Opera since graduation. He has worked with the Henan Province Peking Opera Theatre, Hebei Province Peking Opera Theatre, and Jilin Province Opera Theatre while continuing his family’s tradition of Chinese medicine studies, ultimately obtaining a physician’s license.

From 2016 to 2020, Xu pursued further education at the Jilin Academy of Arts, earning a bachelor’s degree in Arts and a Bachelor of Arts in Performing Arts.

Role and Expertise:

Xu specializes as a huadan (painted face) actor with a strong command of martial artistry, powerful vocals, and precise stage movements. He is skilled in portraying characters from small painted face roles to wusheng (martial male) roles.

Xu has excelled in performances of Drunken Fight at the Temple, Reed Marshes, Capturing Guan Sheng, Farewell My Concubine, Four Ping Mountains, White Water Beach, Li Kui Visits His Mother, Fighting in the Melon Garden, Defeating Jiao Zan, and more.

Career Development:

Since joining the Shanghai Peking Opera Theatre, Xu has actively sought growth opportunities, participating in the Shang Changrong Art Workshop where he studied the role of Dou Erdun in Tianba Visits the Mountain. He also apprenticed under Zhang Shanlin to master Four Ping Mountains, a classic work of the Gai school, playing the wusheng role of Pei Yuanqing with singing, dialogue, acting, and combat skills.

Xu’s performances have been showcased on notable stages such as the Tianchan Yifu Theatre during the 135th-anniversary tribute to Gai Jiaotian and the Wanping Theatre in the celebration of the 130th anniversary of Mei Lanfang’s birth. He has also appeared in programs on CCTV, Hubei TV, and Tianjin TV, further solidifying his reputation in the field of Peking Opera.
